A summary of six months of work for the Canadian Boat to Gaza (CBG)

Dear CBG friends and supporters;

As 2010 comes to an end, and as the world commemorates the two-year anniversary of the beginning of Israel's vicious three-week assault on Gaza, we would like to update you on our progress.

We started work in July with two goals in mind: to sail by the end of 2010 within a larger international flotilla to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and to challenge the illegal Israeli blockade. Our intention was to challenge the blockade both internationally, and more importantly, locally within the context of the Canadian political scene by bringing awareness to the injustices facing the Palestinian people and to our government's shameful support of Israel and its atrocities.

Over the past six months we have been working with volunteers across Canada to achieve our goals and we are very proud of our achievements and of the support we continue to receive from groups and individuals like you.

Internal organization:

Our committees are actively organizing all aspects of the project, including media, fundraising and outreach, and logistics. We have gained the support and endorsement of many individuals and over 100 respected Canadian organizations.

International coordination and departure date:

We are members of the international "Freedom Flotilla 2" (FF2) coordinated by an international coalition. We are actively participating in international meetings, where currently there are 12 other countries represented. Free Gaza, our original international partner, is also part of the international Freedom Flotilla initiative. We attended the FF2 meeting in Rome this month where different initiative representatives' discussed the logistical and political issues surrounding this unprecedented international campaign.

The change of our CBG sailing date is affected by this international coalition as much as by local progress (financial and logistical). Considering that the impact of any action increases exponentially with such cooperation, we are committed to continue coordinating our work with the international coalition towards our common goal of sailing in Spring 2011.

Fundraising:

In order to sail by this Spring's target date, we need the continued support of Canadians like you. So far, we have surpassed $125,000 and with your help and generous contribution to our holiday campaign, we should start the new year having raised over half of our target of $300 000. Message à nos ami-e-s et supporters

Alors que 2010 tire à sa fin et qu’arrive le second anniversaire de l’agression israélienne de Gaza « plomb durci », permettez-nous de faire le point avec vous.

Notre travail a débuté en juillet avec deux objectifs : prendre la mer avant la fin de 2010 au sein d’une flottille internationale chargé d’aide humanitaire et défier le blocus illégal de Gaza. Ces objectifs ont comme corollaire de dénoncer l’attitude honteuse du gouvernement canadien qui appuie inconditionnellement Israël et les atrocités imposées à la population palestinienne par l’état sionniste.
Au cours de ces six mois, notre groupe a reçu, et continue de recevoir, le soutien de centaines de personnes comme vous, et grâce à cette collaboration nous avons beaucoup avancé.

À l’interne

Nos comités œuvrent sur tous les aspects du projet : média, financement, sensibilisation, logistique. Plus d’une centaine d’organisations et de personnalités en vue ont décidé de parrainer le projet.

Au plan international: date de départ

Nous sommes maintenant membre de la « Flotille pour la liberté II » —Freedom Flotilla II— (FF2) qui coordonne l’action d’une douzaine d’initiatives similaires à la nôtre à travers le monde. Free Gaza, notre partenaire de départ, est également membre de FF2. Nous avons récemment participé à une rencontre à Rome pour discuter des défis logistiques et politiques engendrés par une campagne d’une ampleur inédite dans le mouvement de solidarité avec la Palestine.

Vous comprendrez que la date de départ de notre bateau est autant déterminée par les délibérations de la coalition qu’à notre propre niveau de préparation. Puisque nous sommes convaincus que l’impact de l’opération est directement lié au fait que nous réussissions à agir en coordination avec les autres groupes, nous visons à appareiller au cours du printemps 2011 au sein de la FF2.

Financement

Pour lancer notre navire ce printemps, il nous faut pouvoir compter sur le soutien de citoyens comme vous. À la mi-décembre, nous avions plus de 125 000 $ dans nos coffres et grâce aux généreuses contributions que nous sommes en train de recueillir pendant la saison des fêtes, nous espérons entamer la nouvelle année avec la moitié des 300 000 $ nécessaires.
