Belgians join the GAZA FREEDOM FLOTILLA

Five organizations, IHH, Greek Flotilla, Flotilla Swedish, and the European Free Gaza Campaign Save Gaza are collectively responsible for the Freedom Flotilla. This humanitarian aid convoy consists of eight fleets, three freight ships and five passenger boats on May 27 together hoping to dock in the Gaza Strip. Over 600 people from over 40 different countries will break the blockade on Gaza under the slogan: "We people of the world do what our governments refuse to do." Two young Belgian women, Griet Deknopper (32) and Inge Neefs (26), joined the flotilla and make the crossing to the sealed Gaza Strip, where a half million Palestinians imprisoned by Israel since 2007 on an area of just 360 square kilometers.

Dit humanitair hulpkonvooi bestaat uit acht vloten, waarvan drie goederenschepen en vijf passagiersboten die op 27 mei samen hopen aan te meren in de Gazastrook. "Israël laat slechts 80 goederen toe in Gaza. Potloden, pennen, boekentassen, koelkasten, chocolade, boeken, papier, plastic speelgoed, lichtperen, medicatie tegen kanker, cement en generators zijn slechts enkele van de vele goederen die niet geïmporteerd kunnen worden. De Freedom Flotilla brengt meer dan 5000 ton essentiële medische goederen, school- en constructiemateriaal met zich mee die zal bijdragen aan de relatieve reconstructie van Gaza" aldus de twee Belgische deelneemsters.

Sinds 2007, nadat Hamas verkozen werd, heeft Israël de Gazastrook nagenoeg verzegeld en afgesloten van de buitenwereld.
Zelfs na de militaire belegering in de winter van 2008-2009 houdt Israël de blokkade van de Gazastrook aan en wordt medische en humanitaire hulp slechts met mondjesmaat toegelaten. Volgens het Rode Kruis sluit dit de heropbouw van de Gazastrook uit en wordt de Gazaanse economie gewurgd door deze blokkade.

"Israël's dreigementen om ongewapende burgers op de schepen met geweld aan te vallen zijn schandalig, maar eveneens karakteristiek voor het wrede en gewelddadige beleid dat Israël voert ten aanzien van Gaza. Enkele dagen geleden werd er in de Israëlische media melding gemaakt van fundamentalistische Israëli die onze Flotilla zouden stoppen."
